Team Management: Reaching Collective Performance

Lecturers: Sylviane Cannio

Team management is a concept that is increasingly gaining importance in today’s companies and organisations. Setting clear objectives or motivating the members of your company can have a huge impact on the success of your business. Many companies know how crucial it is but don’t know how to achieve it. As business is becoming even more competitive and lean management has increased internal pressures, corporations need to demonstrate both internally and externally that their management cares for and cultivates values of trust, respect and people orientation. Though coaching is a profession in its own right, many of its tools, mind-sets and behaviours can be integrated into their manager’s toolkit, in order to shift from a more traditional or directive leadership style to a more empowered or participative leadership style.

For this very reason, European Professionals Network (EPN) is going to hold a Breakfast talk on “Team Management: Reaching collective performance” to expand its members’ leadership and team management skills. The seminar will be given by Master Certified Coach Sylviane Cannio, who will share her experience and knowledge on this subject. We would be delighted to have your presence at this event which will also include advices on tips and tricks on team management and the different tools used.

Content of the Breakfast Talk

1st Part: Presentation of team management as a whole and how it can impact on your business/organization

2nd Part: Achieving successful team management: Tips & Tricks

3rd Part: Group exercises – get the Coach Attitude

Report of the Event

Team management is a concept that is increasingly gaining importance in today’s companies and organizations. For this very reason European Professionals Network (EPN) acted to expand its members’ leadership and team management skills by hosting a seminar titled “Team Management: Reaching collective performance.” The lecturer of the event was Master Certified Coach Sylviane Cannio, whois one of the five Belgian Master Certified Coaches — the highest international recognized certification level for coaching.

At the highly interactive seminar on April 27th, Ms. Cannio requested the participants to think about what the key characteristics of a productive and successful manager and worker are and then heard each of the participants’ ideas. Communication skills, self-motivation, integrity, promoting cross-level and cross-functional collaboration and trust were among the ideas agreed and further elaborated by Ms. Cannio. According to the coach, the paradigms of diversity, value and respect are highly necessary for improving the business. She also advised that people should achieve a balance between their personal and professional life. Being dedicated and ambitious is admirable to a certain extent, but we should not allow work to define our self-worth and identity, she underlined. Another issue Ms. Cannio stressed at the seminar was not to use negative words when leading and taking a decision. Managers need to choose their words carefully when managing and supervising teams; otherwise, they’ll soon discover that they are too much focusing on negativity and it damages their staff and productivity – not to mention their career, the master certified coach underscored.

EPN CONFERENCE: EUROPEAN FEDERALISM

  08 March 2014 11:30

EPN Office @ Auguste Reyerslaan 207, 1030 Schaarbeek, België

 EPN CONFERENCE

“EUROPEAN FEDERALISM”

On the road to European Federalism: Challenges & Expectations Ahead

Saïd El Khadraoui (MEP, Belgium, Socialistische Partij.Anders)

Peter Oomsels (Vice-President of Young European Federalists)

EPN has the pleasure to invite you to its conference organised in the context of the European Parliament Elections of 2014, where the keynote speakers, Peter Oomsels (Young European Federalists) and Saïd El Khadraoui (MEP) will discuss federalism and the future of Europe. This event will be held on the 8th of March 2014 between 11.30 and 13.30The debate will be moderated by Mete Öztürk, a Brussels-based journalist specialized in European issues reporting for Zaman newspaper, the top-circulating daily in Turkey.

The idea of a Federal Europe has a long history dating back to the 19th century. Nevertheless, for the past years European federalism has taken a new turn. The Spinelli Group, an initiative launched in September 2010 and gathering more than 110 MEPs, promotes the injection of a federalist momentum into the policy-making process and policies of the European Union. Eurosceptics call for a drastic reduction of European competences while pro-European consider that the solution to the current problems could be found in further integration. But is European federalism desirable? Can it help Europe recover from the crisis and win back the hearts of its citizens? Would it be possible to direct the European integration process toward a Federal Europe? Would this solution be accepted by the citizens? With the European elections coming closer, which party and, above all, which European project will win the race? Such critical questions and more will be discussed at the panel.

The Report of the Event

With the European elections coming up, the debate about the future of Europe is raging. The Eurosceptics and the Euro-enthusiasts are defending radically different projects. Among the Pro-Europeans, there are growing talks about a federal European Union. To handle this crucial topic, EPN was glad to welcome Mr. Said El Khadraoui, MEP, and Mr. Peter Oomsels, Vice President of Young European Federalists. They exposed their visions on what a federal Europe would be and what it would bring. They both agreed that a different Europe is needed, more political and closer to the citizens. In their views, a federal Europe wouldn’t imply the centralization and the disappearance of the diverse identities but it would give to the European Union the power to act when a problem arises. In the debate following the conference, questions were raised about citizens’ participation, the social crisis and the UK referendum. This conference highlighted important points regarding the future of Europe and interesting issues on which we should reflect.

EPN CONFERENCE “In the current context, is it possible to develop a green and social Europe?”

  04 March 2014 19:30

EPN Office @ Auguste Reyerslaan 207, 1030 Schaarbeek, België

EPN CONFERENCE

“In the current context, is it possible to develop a green and social Europe?”

Bart Staes (MEP of Groen! & candidate for the European Elections)

Saskia Bricmont (Head of the Political Department of Ecolo & candidate for the European Elections)

EPN has the pleasure to invite you to its first conference organised in the context of the European Parliament Elections of 2014, where the keynote speakers, Bart Staes, member of the European Parliament and Saskia Bricmont, Ecolo candidate for the European Elections, will discuss the future of Europe. This event will be held on the 4th of March between 19.30 and 21.30.

With the European Parliament elections coming up, we are all wondering which political movement is going to take the lead, especially now that European citizens are divided into two main groups: the Eurosceptics and the pro-Europeans. These elections mark a turning point for the future of Europe, which is why we must all be well aware of what is being proposed and what we should expect from our soon-to-be parliament representatives. What are their visions of Europe? How do they intend to fight the crisis and promote their values and ideas at the same time? Is it possible? What is their reaction and how are they planning to respond to the alarming rise of the extreme right in the European Parliament?

The debate will be moderated by  Serdar Yesilyurt, director of the EU Representation Office of the Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON).

The topic of the event will be: ‘In the current context, is it possible to develop a green and social Europe?’ It will be divided in two subtopics:

Subtopic 1:  Is the prioritization of a green Europe feasible in a period of economic crisis? This subtopic will be presented by Mr. Bart Staes.

Subtopic 2:  Is a more social Europe the solution to fight extreme right? This subtopic will be presented by Ms. Saskia Bricmont.

The Report of the Event

In the context of the 2014 European Parliament elections which will take place in May, EPN has decided to organise a series of events to bring citizens closer to Parliamentarians. The first conference “In the current context, is it possible to develop a green and social Europe” was presented by Ms Bricmont, candidate to the European Elections for Ecolo. Various subjects such as youth unemployment, the prioritization of a green Europe and extreme right were tackled. One important question came up several times: Is it possible to combine green economy and social objectives? Although some participants believed that a green and social Europe could not be achieved at the same time, Ms Bricmont insisted it was possible through, for example, the creation of green jobs. The conference was followed by an animated debate illustrating the preoccupations of today’s citizens.

EPN SEMINAR

Cyber-security Tips by Expert Huzeyfe Onal

How to protect our internet systems, servers and e-mails from cyber-attacks?

EPN Limburg organized a lecture on cyber security followed by a French dinner at the office of Vuslat Association on Feb. 23, 2014.

Huzeyfe Önal, a cyber expert specializing in Linux/Unix systems, lecturer at Bilgi and Bahcesehir universities in Istanbul, has worked for several large companies such as Ford, Vodafone and Turkcell. He has helped businesses to make their internet systems, servers and e -mails safer against cyber attacks.

Önal gave the attendants quite an informative lecture on safety in the internet world. The subject was “How safe are our personal and business information in the Internet world?”

At the end of the program, the organizers showed their appreciation to Mr. Önal by presenting a bunch of flowers and delicious Belgian chocolates.

Following the lecture, cook Ayse Nida Köylü, who works in the restaurant in Geleen Welcome, presented her gourmet French dinner. The appetizer section of the menu offered pepper soup; the main meal was “farci et boeuf stroganoff cordon bleu” with sauce, rice and as for the desert,  there was creme brulee!

As the event neared the end, the articipants were kindly asked to complete a survey about what they thought about the organization and what their suggestions about the event were.

Also at the end of the event there was a cocktail, which was a nice time to network with one another.

Program Report:

The 20th breakfast talk of EPN was a highly useful and informative event that shared real issues and experiences on cybersecurity in Turkey as well as other countries, according to the attendee feedbacks. Computer Engineer and Cybersecurity Expert Huzeyfe Önal gave two-hour long presentation informative on a personal and business level. According to the expert, information is the most valuable and desired thing in cyber world with all countries and companies aiming for collecting more info about more people. It may be for commercial, political or social goals, Önal added. That’s exactly why cybersecurity is a necessary consideration for individuals and families as well as businesses and governments.

Önal further noted that the USA, China and Israel are the most powerful countries in cyber world, while India, the UK, China, Germany, USA and Korea are the countries that completed their national cybersecurity strategy. Elaborating on the methods and techniques being used, he said that cyber-hacking experts are often using social engineering techniques to gain the trust of their targets. Even the most important institutions fall for this, he added. As for cybersecurity tips, users should always be suspicious of unknown links or requests sent through email or text message and set secure passwords. With such and more measures, hopefully our world will grow to provide a safer digital environment for everyone.
