The last century of the Ottoman Empire is known with a number of compositions that were added to the Turkish cultural repertoire and Turkish classical makams (a system of melody types used in Turkish classical music) that were performed in various kinds of way and style. In an attempt to revive the compositions of the time, a group of young Belgian virtuosos formed the unique music group ofLâmekân Ensemble. We’d like to have your presence at this moveable music feast that will take place at the theatre hall of the Ecole des Etoiles on Feb. 7.

Please click to listen the composition titled Hüseyni Külliyat performed by the group.

EPN BREAKFAST TALKS 19: The Phenomenon and Education of Art in Belgium – Is it a spare time activity or a concept of civilization?

  26 January 2014 10:30 – 13:00

Ecole Des Etoiles @ 2G, Rue de la Grenouillette 1130 Bruxelles

The Phenomenon and Education of Art in Belgium

Is it a spare time activity or a concept of civilization?

Pianist and Composer Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu

As European Professionals Network (EPN), we continue to bring together experts representing various professions on the last Sunday of every month to provide the attendants with the opportunity to discuss interesting and thought-provoking issues.

In this month’s talk, Turkish symphony composer and pianist Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu, who began his musical career at a very early age and before long made a name for himself with his talent throughout the world, will talk about his musical journey and the perception and education of art in Belgium. On behalf of EPN, we would be delighted to have your presence at this breakfast talk which will also include a piano resital at the theatre hall of the Ecole des Etoiles following the breakfast and the talk.

Brief Biography of Dürrüoğlu

Born in 1969 in Gerede, the Turkish composer, now resident in Belgium, of orchestral, chamber and piano works that have been performed in Europe and North America, started his piano lessons at the age of 10 and started receiving music education at the Ankara State Conservatory, where he was treated as “special statue”. Having studied piano and composition with well-known figures, Dürrüoğlu continued his education in famous music schools in Belgium and the USA with the scholarships of, respectively, Eczacıbaşı and Fulbright. He became the first Turkish student to get accepted at the  Chapelle musicale Reine Élisabeth, an international school where young talented musicians are trained, in Waterloo in 1989. Earning his DMus at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1994, the pianist has given solo recitals since age 12 and often plays chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra. He has performed in Argentina, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the UK and the USA. He has taught chamber music at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussels since 1994.

Program Report

Following a pleasant breakfast with friends, the composer and pianist, Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu, took to the stage. He started his lecture by asking each person in the room to introduce themselves. Then, with his sincere attitude, the pianist talked about what a parent should do for his child’s music education. Dürrüoğlu strongly suggested that the earlier a child starts playing a musical instrument, the better it is. He then gave an example: “Music is a language just like French or Dutch is. And it is a common knowledge that it is always easier to teach a language at an early age.” The child’s motivation may not remain the same throughout the education; but the important factor affecting his music education is having a teacher who can build a strong relationship with the student, he noted. Upon a question from the attendees about whether being a successful musician is possible only with innate talent, the pianist underscored that it is the combination of talent, knowledge and practice that leads to success. At the second part of the program, the pianist played sections from the compositions of Bach, Mozart and himself, concluding the event with a fascinating musical feast.

Report of the Event

The EPN members who have decided to spend the day by walking around Ghent and enjoying a concert at night gathered at noon on Dec. 15, Sunday and started to take a pleasant walk together. Guided by Mr. Halbay Turumtay, who is a PhD candidate and has been living in Ghent for years, the group caught a glimpse of some of Ghent’s most important buildings and streets and heard stories about them.  The members toured around St Bavo’s Square — known as the heart of the city –, the square of Vrijdagmarkt (Friday Market), the Great Butcher’s Hall, St Nicolas’ Church — a 13th century church in Gothic style and one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in the city –, the Belfry — the 91-meter-high medieval tower — and Gravensteen — a castle dating back to the Middle Ages.

After getting a quick taste of all the city has to offer, the members visited the department of Plant System Biology Institute of Ghent University’s Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB). Mr. Turumtay, who works at the institute, told about his research, which is modifying the plant cell wall to improve the conversion of cell wall polysaccharides in the context of bio-energy, and showed around the institute, the labs and the greenhouse. Later, the group grabbed a pizza and, with a full stomach, enjoyed the concert at night. During the concert, Ortaçgil sang his most famous songs while Oğur accompanied him with his guitar and then Oğur sang some very old traditional songs in his unique way and played various kinds of stringed instruments. At the end, the day was a treat both for the eye and the ear.

Seminar Report

Addressing to dozens of people interested in entrepreneurship and establishing a company, Hüseyin Aslan, the founder and CEO of the Aslan Consulting BVBA, talked on primary requirements for starting a business from scratch. According to Aslan, the stage of planning and preparation before setting up a company is crucial. This stage includes research in the chosen sector, coming up with a company name that promises success, determining the target audience, conducting a feasibility study, opening a bank account for the company and having a startup capital. Once all of these are achieved, there comes the stages of notary, trade register and activating the VAT number. While talking on general principles for setting up a new business, Aslan also underscored the procedures in Belgium in specific and how these procedures differ for the non-EU citizens. The CEO also mentioned the concept of “fake tradesman.” In order to avoid the high social security contributions paid for laborers, employers have their laborers registered as “managers.” This is called fake tradesman and it stemmed from the high labor cost in Belgium, Aslan noted. Another interesting point he made was that Belgium in fact welcomes investments from abroad and yet the long and complicated visa procedures the country requires is a huge obstacle before these investments and, therefore, it needs to be solved immediately.

No matter in which sector or position we work, we have to deal with visual arts and graphics as they are indispensible for institutional and individual communication. As EPN Technology and Engineering Platform, we are going to cover the Adobe Illustrator software, which is used for crafting digital logos, graphics and preparing contents for magazines, books, newspapers, adverts, posters and websites, at this month’s workshop. Mr. Ali Uysal, who works for the international newspaper Zaman Benelux as a graphic designer, will show the EPN members that are interested in the topic the fundamentals of Adobe Illustrator and look over some samples. We will be pleased to have your presence at this in-depth workshop which, we believe, will be helpful for those who want to expand their skill set, learn advanced techniques in Illustrator and improve the quality of their work.
