On December 26th the MAX Project´s “Building new narratives: Migration and its contribution European society”, final event was hosted in the Museum of Natural History in Brussels. It was the celebration and epitome of diversity and cohabitation of different origins and cultures.

Adem Kumcu, president of the New European Business Confederation, opened the event with a keynote speech underlining the importance of combining scientific facts and statistics with stories, narratives, art, culture food, music etc. which is often forgotten when speaking of foreigners and their contribution to the host society. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of the human and emotional touch for successful advocacy.

Following the speech, the film makers Lidija Zelovic and César Díaz who were part of the jury of the MAX Film Festival, were invited to the stage and had a conversation moderated by the Master of Ceremonies, Vanessa Cotterell.

Lidija, coming from Bosnia, and having to leave her country when it was at war, she explains that for her it was difficult to accept that she was a refugee because she did not see herself as such, but as a “princess and princesses could not be refugees”. César points out during the conversation that integration does not mean forgetting who you are. Both shared experiences and interesting insights about their journey and vision of migration which you can enjoy here. After the discussion, participants had the chance to interact with each other in a relaxed atmosphere over exquisite and varied food prepared by immigrants and refugees living in Belgium. In parallel, two exhibitions, showing paintings and cartoons about migration made by refugee and immigrant children and a mosaic photography exhibition describing the contribution of immigrants to Belgium were accessible for participants to visit throughout the evening.

The soirée continued with two captivating concerts one by the Tatyos Ensemble which took the audience to southern places through modern and classical Turkish music and one by In C, an ensemble of 14 musicians with as many instruments as different cultural influences, reflecting the wealth of music in the city. Meanwhile and accompanying the rhythm of the music, the illustrator Gerda Dendooven provided colourful, meaningful and hypnotizing projections on a screen behind the musicians.

In contrast to the lively atmosphere, participants had the option to escape and join the film projection taking place in a cinema room where two movies, centered around the topic of migration, that participated in the MAX Film Festival, were shown.

It was an enjoyable and entertaining evening, with in a unique and magical setting that allowed participants to remember our humble and common origins, to escape reality for an evening, travel in time and to faraway countries.

European Professionals Network attended the Public Hearing on “Implementation of the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration”, held by the EESC – European Economic and Social Committee on the 2nd of May 2019. EPN also partecipated in the event, jointly with UNITEE, on behalf of the MAX project granted by the EC through AMIF funds.

The event “Implementation of the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration” focused on how the EU and its Member States can contribute to the implementation of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. Two panels covered, on one hand, the views of relevant institutional stakeholders on what can and should be done at European level. On the other hand, the second panel focused on the role that social partners and civil society organisations can play in working towards achieving the compact’s objectives.

The event started with the intervention of José Antonio Moreno Diaz, who presented the EESC’s opinion on “Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe and Orderly Regular Migration” and pointed out the urgency of promoting an in-depth debate about the Global Compact at EU level. “The Global Compact represents a first step towards a multilateral governance of Migration and it is in totally accordance with EU values and art.2 TEU”, said José Antonio Moreno Diaz.

Maria Giovanna Manieri, Political Advisor on Migration and Asylum (Greens/EFA Group) at the European Parliament, highlighted several barriers impacting on the implementation of the Global Compact. Among these barriers the fact that the debate about Migration has been massively politicized and the lack of accurate data about migration flows and management systems across EU. In this respect, the proposal of the Knowledge Platform supported by UN “could represent a good, but not thorough, step” on Manieri’s view.

Disinformation and normalization were two of the keywords springing from the panel discussion. Panelists stated that it is indispensable to gather real data so that to counter fake news, to change the negative narrative about migration and, finally, to normalize the ongoing Migration debate.

As a founding principle, EPN aims to mobilize the people in professional life by engaging them in all of the phases of its activities. The sub-platforms within EPN are the most effective ways of doing so. They function as semi-independent entities that represent a hub where professionals in relevant sectors come together, discuss issues of common concern and undertake projects and activities accordingly on a voluntary basis. This voluntary engagement is in accordance with EPN`s aim to increase voluntary engagements among professionals. Equally importantly, through these platforms the professionals are encouraged and given chances to participate actively in the society and to be able to increase their democratic and civic involvement.

The main objectives of the platforms are;

  • Providing networking opportunities among professionals in similar sectors
  • Organizing projects and events for career development
  • Contributing to the awareness-raising efforts within the general public concerning their areas of expertise
  • Trying to enhance the practical knowledge among the university students at relevant departments
  • Giving advice and sharing experiences with high school graduates who want to continue their university education in any of the areas of sub-platforms
  • Advocating the rights and challenges of the specific field in the EU level

Professionals under each platform meet regularly and are represented, by a president elected among them, in the meeting of platform representatives. At these meetings the workings and proposals of each platform are discussed with the presence of EPN`s secretary-general and the executive committee.
